The Golden Age of Television? Whaaaaa? Tuesday, October 02, 2007 |

Several of the blogs I check on a consistent basis have postulated that we currently are in the golden age of television. When I first heard this I scoffed and thought they were crazy but upon further examination I'm starting to become a believer. I have never been a big TV watcher other than sports but since we bought a Tivo over 3 years ago I've been able to get into more shows and I've noticed recently the dramatic improvement in quality over the past several season. I started thinking about the shows that I love currently (Friday Night Lights, Lost, The Office, 30 Rock, Scrubs, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc.) and recently canceled shows that were beyond brilliant (Arrested Development, Firefly, The West Wing, etc..) and then I thought about the movies I've seen in the past year and only a few of them stood out to me as being amazing.

So I am now a believer that TV has been as good as it ever has in my life time. It would seem to me that television would be more difficult to write for considering the length and breadth of character development as well as just being able to keep the plot moving at the right speed and to keep people interested for hours on end. Most of these shows have done more than just sparkle and fade like my favorite TV show, Twin Peaks, did. These are consistently great shows, season after season.

My only hope is that people get into and stick with some of these shows to help them avoid being canceled. I'd hate to see shows that are so well done go the way of Arrested Development and Freaks and Geeks, by being cut down in their prime.
